LPG is very convenient and is used in both households and businesses. As useful as it is, if it is not used correctly it can be potentially hazardous. To ensure that LPGas is safe while in use, it is imperative that all appliances are verified as being compliant with the national safety standards governing their manufacture. If this is not adhered to, appliances could malfunction and lead to unnecessary and potentially hazardous incidents.

It should be noted that LPG has different properties compared to, for example, natural gas which necessitates the requirement for appliance testing to allow for these differences. It is kept under pressure as a liquid and when released it becomes a highly flammable gas which is heavier than air.

Appliances which do not function correctly could cause a gas leak. An appliance which has been tested and found to comply with the safety standard will function correctly and not endanger the user.

Any LPG installation requires a registered installer to undertake the installation. This is a requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and therefore a legal requirement. All installations must be installed in a specific way that will diminish the risks of a leak or malfunction which may result in the start or spread of a fire.

Only a registered LP gas installer may work on a gas system and every installation must be signed off by the installer who must issue a Certificate of Conformity to the owner/user.

Meeting these requirements will give an assurance that the installation is compliant and safe for use.
