Lucio’s Pizzeria – 35 years of perfecting pizzas

You know you must be doing something right when one of the country’s top chefs and award-winning restaurateurs recommends your establishment. Lucio’s Pizzeria, a family-owned restaurant since 1987, is one of award-winning chef Dario de Angeli’s favourite places to eat saying it “serves good, good food”.

Little wonder then that this Northcliff-based Italian eatery came third in the inaugural Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge last year, with their value for money pizzas which are lovingly made with a homemade dough and tomato sauce and finished off with good quality mozzarella cheese and ample fresh toppings.

Clearly a winner with their customers who voted for Lucio’s in their hundreds, and look set to do the same this year with the recent announcement of a second outing of the Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge.

Says owner Bimba Merlo: “Our patrons can’t get enough of our deep pan pizzas, and while we also offer thin crust pizzas as well as banting base and gluten-free base options, the demand for our thick base pizzas still outnumbers all the others.

“Hopefully, this year we can make the number one spot in the competition and introduce more people to our fabulous pizzas,” says Merlo.

So what are Lucio’s top three most-ordered pizzas?

“The Lucio’s Special – which is a calzone stuffed with salami, olives and onion, the Claudio Special which is topped with bacon, avo and feta and the Giuliano pizza with spicy chicken, peppadews and feta.”

Since their humble beginnings 35 years ago, Lucio’s has expanded from a small venue with just seven tables to an award-winning 180-seater restaurant. Over the years, they have perfected the art of a true homely Italian cooking, with their appeal and popularity coming from its uncomplicated approach and excellent food served in a wholesome family atmosphere and friendly environment.

The Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge is currently open and runs until September 30, 2022, with the Top 10 and winner being announced in mid-October. The challenge is open to any restaurant offering pizza on their menu and holding a valid liquor license.

Consumers dining at participating restaurants will notice point-of-sale containing a QR code that prompts them to the voting platform. For more information and to vote via the website, please visit: www.votepizza.wine

Each week, a lucky voter will be drawn to win wine from Porcupine Ridge and an EarthFire Pizza Stone & Cutter. A grand prize winner drawn at the end of the challenge will receive wine from Porcupine Ridge, an EarthFire Pizza Oven as well as pizza to the value of R2,000 from their favourite pizzeria.
