Lungelwa Mnyamana, Brand Manager for Essential Foods: Bakeries at SASKO, says that when SASKO Siyasizana Daycare Project was launched in 2015, they had hoped members of the community would support the initiative and each other. “The name Siyasizana is Zulu for ‘we are helping each other’, which is true to the ethos of the programme. When we launched it in 2015, the response was very positive. Earlier in 2016, we handed out 1,385 prizes to over 360 daycares – a number that we thought would be hard to beat. We were wrong. In December 2016 we rewarded 420 daycares for collecting 1,011,011 bags since March 2016, handing out 3,191 prizes in Tembisa.”

By simply collecting discarded or used SASKO bread bags, daycares in Tembisa, Soweto and now Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha in the Western Cape, SASKO is able to assist daycares with basic needs to make their daycare environments more comfortable for the children.

“We always says it’s a small gesture, with large impact. Over 1 million bread bags, will see participating daycares now being able to refrigerate food, prepare cooked meals, mattresses for nap time, and set up tables and chairs during activity and meal times.”
In Tembisa, 65,000 of the bags came from Rhandzo Daycare. Working with SASKO’s team on the ground, Mabel Mashiyane has selected a fridge and freezer, stoves, washing machines, as well as a carpet and tables and chairs.

In a very close second place, Matema Mashilo from Bophelong Daycare collected 60,000 bags and in third place goes to Sekgowagowa where Paulina Tselana and her team collected a total of 34,500 bags.

SASKO also rewarded daycares in Soweto in December where Siyasizana Daycare Project has started picking up momentum: 75,200 bags have been collected by 71 daycares, and a total of 278 prizes were awarded.

First place went to Thando Ndugayela from Joy at Caroline Mavuso Daycare who has collected 10,100 bags. In a close second place, Motjholoko Mucholoko Daycare run by Manini Matamela collected 9,750 bags; and Ellen Seleka from Lesedi Daycare came in third with 8,200 bags.
