Natura Sugars: Two New Unrefined Sugars Products
The only range of truly unrefined sugars in South Africa and exclusively sourced from Mauritius, Natura Sugars, has recently added 2 new products to their already exciting range. Golden Light Brown is a sparkling golden sugar with a subtle buttery taste perfect for everyday use, whilst the Molasses Sugar is the ultimate soft sugar giving the most intense natural molasses flavour.
Unlike normal table sugar, unrefined sugar has not been bleached, irradiated, nor decolourised by ion exchange. This preserves the natural molasses film that surrounds the sugar molecule, creating intense flavour and added health benefits.

In conjunction with the launch of these products, Natura Sugars is very excited to announce the scientifically-proven health benefits of their unrefined sugars. A study carried out recently by the Mauritius Research Council at the University of Mauritius has revealed that Mauritian Special Sugars have antioxidant capacities.
The study demonstrates that the special sugars tested have more anti oxidative potency than refined sugar with soft sugars having the highest antioxidant potential, due to their higher level of molasses content. Our special sugars therefore bring health benefits to its consumers when used as natural sweeteners or as food ingredients. This is in line with other research studies conducted worldwide about the anti-oxidant benefits of unrefined sugarcane-derived products.
“Natura Sugars’ Muscovado and Demerara sugars are not the same as the local commercial soft brown sugars which consumers are accustomed to, where caramel syrup is added to the white or brown sugar – basically sugar on sugar,” comments Shaheen Rajabally, founder of Natura Sugars. “Artisanal unrefined sugars like Natura Sugars are natural products, having only undergone the bare minimum processing to make them fit for consumption; they do not have any added syrup but instead, have been crafted to lock in the natural molasses (and health benefits) of sugarcane. Natura Sugars has no added syrup, is non-GM, non-irradiated, not bleached, not decolourised and has no added colourants, preservatives or additives – just as nature intended. The Demerara Icing Sugar is sold in a 250g packet whilst the remaining variants are sold in 500g packets.
